What is index cards anyway?

So called “Index Cards” is 5 inch x 3 inch (125 mm x 75 mm) size paper. 6 inch x 4 inch and B6 size index cards are also available in Japan. The 5×3 size card have been used in library, and the 6×4 and B6 have been used by researcher for long time.

Recently, such “analog” index cards is getting popular. Two events become a break-through for this new era of index cards.

One is Jazzmasterson’s photos on the flickr about combination of index cards and GTD (ver. 1 and ver. 2). Another is Merlin Mann’s “Hipster PDA” in his site “43 folders“. He use clipped index cards to manage his tasks.

It was curious for me that “analog” “paper” is getting popular in this “digital” “high-tech” world.

East meets west. There are many productivity books that utilize index cards in Japan. These books are written in 1960′ to 1970′ mainly, when Japanese economy shows rapid growth. It’s time to revive them, and combine them with the “new winds” from west.

Let’s make things more interesting. :)
